What ENERGY STAR® 7.0 Means for You
ProVia has partnered with ENERGY STAR since 2002 to develop energy-efficient windows and doors that meet or exceed their certified criteria. ENERGY STAR windows and doors are independently tested by a third-party testing entity and certified by an independent accreditation agency to meet strict energy-efficiency standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ProVia engineers work closely with the voluntary ENERGY STAR program to design and produce entry doors and replacement windows that provide energy savings and value to our customers.
7.0 Testing and Certification
The U.S. EPA finalized new specifications for ENERGY STAR products in October 2022. The new program is based on a four-year study by the EPA, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The study modeled the energy characteristics of high-performing windows in a variety of operating conditions.
The performance criteria are based on four climate zones – Northern, North Central, South Central, and Southern – and the new certification specifies that qualifying products must perform at a higher level of efficiency. Windows in the Northern zones must significantly lower the U-factor, or heat flow, of the home, and meet the added prescriptive Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) requirement. Windows in the Southern zones must achieve an aggressively lower U-factor and a slightly lower SHGC.
Beginning October 23, 2023, residential windows and doors must meet the Version 7.0 criteria to receive certification and display the ENERGY STAR label. All manufacturing partners must update their product labels with a new map since the climate zones have changed to match the International Energy Conservation Code and reflect the changing climate patterns.
The new standards push manufacturers to drive innovation and enhance the energy efficiency of their products. Doug Anderson, US EPA ENERGY STAR product manager for windows, doors, and skylights, remarked “If all residential windows and doors sold in the United States were certified to ENERGY STAR Version 7.0, the energy cost savings would grow to more than $156 billion each year and more than 53 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be avoided annually.”
The construction and remodeling industry is replete with ENERGY STAR products, and these new specifications push manufacturers to enhance their technology to further boost energy efficiency.
